If you could design the perfect golf destination from scratch, it might look something like Hoi An. A lantern-lit UNESCO World Heritage town on the Thu Bon River, flanked by deserted beaches and surrounded by three championship golf courses within 30 minutes. A dining scene that punches well above its geography. Private villas with their own pools, staff, and beach access. And green fees a fraction of comparable experiences in Japan or Australia.
Hoi An is, in our estimation, the world's most beautiful golf base. Here's how to make the most of it.
The Courses: Three World-Class Layouts
Hoiana Shores Golf Club — 15 minutes from Hoi An
The anchor of any Hoi An golf itinerary. Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s links masterpiece sits on a dune-fringed stretch of coastline that feels ancient and wild. 7,309 yards of championship golf through coastal grass, over dunescape, and along the East Sea. Vietnam's most discussed course, consistently ranked in Asia's top ten.
Montgomerie Links — 20 minutes from Hoi An
Colin Montgomerie's design sits adjacent to the coast, bringing a Scottish links sensibility to Vietnam. The course rewards accuracy over distance — elevated tees, fescue-influenced grass types, and the ever-present coastal breeze make this a thinking player's course. The facilities are excellent and the experience feels more private than the resort-adjacent Hoiana Shores.
Ba Na Hills Golf Club — 30 minutes from Hoi An
The night golf experience. Ba Na Hills sits at 1,500 metres elevation in the Trường Sơn mountains, offering a completely different environment from the coastal courses. Play it by day for mountain panoramas or reserve an evening tee time for the full floodlit experience — one of the most extraordinary things in Vietnamese golf.
Pairing Golf with Hoi An's Culture
Hoi An Ancient Town is a 15-minute drive from the villa zone and requires at least half a day to do justice. The lantern-lit streets, Japanese Covered Bridge, silk traders, and tailoring boutiques are unlike anything in Southeast Asia. AGS schedules cultural days between golf rounds — typically on Day 3 of a 5-day circuit — to let the experience breathe.
For non-golfing partners, Hoi An is an exceptional destination in its own right: cooking classes at the Red Bridge Cooking School, boat tours on the Thu Bon, private tailoring appointments (Hoi An is Vietnam's tailoring capital), and spa retreats keep non-golfers thoroughly engaged while the group plays.
Where to Stay: The An Bang Villa Precinct
An Bang Beach — 5km north of Hoi An Ancient Town — is AGS's preferred accommodation zone for the Hoi An golf circuit. The beach strip has evolved into one of Vietnam's finest private villa destinations: boutique beachside restaurants, morning seafood markets, and exceptional villa properties with private pools and staff.
Our flagship properties — An Bang Holiday Villa and other curated boutique villas in the precinct — accommodate groups of 6–12 with private pools, daily housekeeping, and breakfast preparation. The location places you 15 minutes from Hoiana Shores and 5 minutes from the restaurant strip.
Best Time to Visit
February through September. The February–May window is peak season in the best possible sense — dry, warm, and ideal for both golf and sightseeing. See our Vietnam golf season guide for full detail. Avoid October through January for Central Coast golf due to the Northeast Monsoon.
